Institution Background

The Institute of Information and Communication Technologies (IICT, is a leading independent research unit of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS). IICT is registered at 1 July 2010. It arose after the Academy was reformed, as recommended in the International Evaluation of BAS performed by the European Science Foundation/ALLEA5 (2009). After reorganisation, extensive personal attestation and structural optimisation, today IICT staff includes the most successful computer scientists from the former Institute for Parallel Processing (IPP), Institute for Information Technologies (IIT) and Institute for Computer and Communication Systems (ICCS). IICT integrates the strongest Bulgarian groups in: large scale high performance computations, parallel and distributed algorithms, linguistic and semantic technologies, intelligent systems, signal and image processing, pattern recognition, optimisation and control and hierarchical systems. During the program period 2010-2013, IICT was the key performer in 2 national Research Infrastructures (among the 7 listed in the National Roadmap): (i) Bulgarian supercomputing infrastructure (represented by Prof. Svetozar Margenov); (ii) CLARIN-BG, part of the EU Language Technology and Resource infrastructure (represented by Assoc. Prof. Kiril Simov). One of the former institutes – IPP, was awarded two large EC grants as a Centre of Excellence in FP5 (the project BIS-21) and Centre of Competence in FP6 (the project BIS-21++). Currently, IICT is a mono-contractor of the big FP7 project AComIn: Advanced Computing for Innovation (, coordinated by Prof. Galia Angelova. The Institute is also the host organization of the Bulgarian Science Fund project SuperCA++: Centre of Excellence on Supercomputing Applications coordinated by Prof. Svetozar Margenov, see:

Prof. Svetozar Margenov is the Head of Scientific Computing Department, and is currently the Director of IICT. He is coordinator of the National Centre of Excellence on “Supercomputing Applications” (SuperCA++). The consortium of SuperCA++ includes research groups from three leading Universities and four institutes of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The research interests of prof. Margenov are in the fields of computer modelling, multilevel methods, robust finite element methods, multilevel preconditioning solvers, parallel algorithms and supercomputing applications in engineering and environmental problems. He is founder and first chairmen of the Bulgarian Section of SIAM. Prof. Margenov is the main organizer of the series of world recognized biannual conferences on “Large Scale Scientific Computations, see: .
