The vacancy at the Department of Computer Science is open to outstanding individuals who hold a doctorate and are interested in an excellent opportunity to pursue a successful scientific career. The call is open on all levels of the tenure track system: Assistant, Associate and Full Professor. While we expect most successful applicants to have carried out at least one postdoctoral period, all outstanding candidates will be considered. We especially welcome applications from applicants in early stages of their careers. Industry experience is considered a merit but not mandatory.

The tenure-track position in large-scale data-intensive systems is focused on the development of large-scale data storage and processing needed for modern data-intensive applications, including on-line analytical or transaction processing systems. Topics can include but are not limited to

  • Big data platforms
  • Data engineering
  • Distributed data processing
  • Distributed databases
  • Massive data management applications
  • Methods and algorithms for massive data management
  • Software development methods for modern data-intensive applications

Aalto Department of Computer Science is one of Europe’s leading university departments in data science related fields of Computer Science. The current faculty’s strength is apparent in e.g. the high volume of extremely competitive funding from the Academy of Finland (equivalent to National Science Foundation) and the European Research Council (ERC), as well as the volume of high-achieving international students entering the MSc and PhD programs. Furthermore, as the foremost computer science educator in Finland, the department is home to the majority of the best Finnish Computer Science students. In total, the department hosts 44 professors with diverse interests, forming a fertile environment for cross-disciplinary collaborations. On a larger scale, as a technology-friendly, yet small country, Finland offers ample opportunities for low-overhead collaboration with industrial and government partners as well.

The position comes with a competitive start up package. The salary for the position follows the salary scale in use at Aalto University, but applicants may also provide salary requirements.

The application material shall include the following appendices:

  1. cover letter  that includes a summary of merits and most important achievements,
  2. curriculum vitae (with contact details; recommended maximum length two pages),
  3. research statement (recommended maximum length four pages),
  4. teaching statement (recommended maximum length four pages),
  5. names, positions, affiliations and e-mail addresses of five senior academic people available for providing recommendation letters,
  6. the web address of the applicant’s Google Scholar Profile and Researcher ID,
  7. list of publications including:
    1. five most important publications in ranked order (1,…,5), with links to their pdf versions, and
    2. all publications categorised as follows:
      1. peer-reviewed journals
      2. peer-reviewed conferences
      3. other publications

The applicants will be reviewed on the basis of their research achievements in relation to career stage; teaching credentials and activity in scientific community. Shortlisted applicants will be asked to supplement their applications with a more detailed research and teaching plan, and material that describe their merits in these areas in more detail. The application material of shortlisted candidates may be submitted for review by external experts.

Should there be a lack of eligible outstanding applicants, the application period may be extended. About nesus

Jesus Carretero is a Full Professor of Computer Architecture and Technology at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (Spain), where he is responsible for that knowledge area since 2000. He is also Director of the Master in Administration and Management of Computer Systems, which he founded in 2004. He also serves and has served as a Technology Advisor and in applied projects with several companies such as RENFE, EADS, INDRA, SIEMENS or ISOLUX, developing research and innovation projects. He is a project reviewer for Spanish research ministry and also European Union. His research activity is centered on high-performance computing systems, distributed systems and real-time systems. He has participated and leaded several national and international research projects in these areas, founded by Madrid Regional Government, Spanish Education Ministry and the European union. He was teaching in Facultad de Informática of the Universidad Politécnica de Madrid (Spain) since 1989 until 1997. In 1997 and 1998 he was a visiting scholar at the NorthWestern University of Chicago (Ill, USA), where he was researching with Prof. Alok Choudhary. He works currently at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, where he has been teaching since 2000. Carretero is a senior member of the IEEE Computer Society and member of the ACM.
