Institution Background

The University of Ioannina was established in 1964. The university campus is currently located on the outskirts of the city of Ioannina at the northwestern part of Greece, and occupies an area of 1,416 acres with building space of 225,620 sq.m. The university consists of 6 schools and 15 departments spanning the entire range from social sciences to natural sciences, engineering, medicine, economics and fine arts. The undergraduate enrollment includes 16,245 students, and the graduate about 3,512 MSc and PhD students. The management of research funding is conducted by the Research Committee, which was established in 1982 with the legal responsibility to administer all the programs of training, research and development. The Department of Computer Science and Engineering accepted the first undergraduate students in 1993, and operates a full graduate program since 1998. It currently consists of 26 faculty members in systems, networks, databases, artificial intelligence, architecture, algorithms, numerical analysis and optimization. Since 2003, the university participates in the ownership of the Scientific and Technological Park of Epirus, a privately held company that fosters the commercialization of scientific and technological innovation through early-stage office space and legal, financial, and other consulting services. Research Group Background

The Systems Research Group was established by Prof. Stergios Anastasiadis in 2007 to conduct leading-edge research in systems software. The group has extensive experience in file and structured storage systems, content distribution software, systems security in federated and virtualized environments, and multiprocessing. Currently the group includes 3 PhD students, 2 MSc and 4 BSc. It has coordinated or participated in R&D projects co-funded by EU in collaboration with participating institutions from the EU and third countries. The group maintains state-of-the-art equipment consisting of several rack servers, switches and reliable storage. We are interested to participate in research activities related to virtualization, data storage and systems security. For more info:

Stergios Anastasiadis is Assistant Professor at the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, University of Ioannina (BSc U. Patras 1994, MSc U. Toronto 1996, PhD U. Toronto 2001). He brings to the project valuable experience in modeling, design, implementation and performance evaluation of distributed storage systems. In the past he spent several years in funded research at Univ. Toronto (Canada), Duke Univ. (USA), HP Labs (USA), FORTH (Crete) and Univ. Ioannina. His research has been funded by the NSERC (Canada), NSF and NIH (USA), Hewlett-Packard (USA) and Bodossakis Foundation. Additionally, he participated in the Biomedical Informatics Research Network (NIH, USA), the Coregrid Network of Excellence (FP6), and served as principal investigator of R&D projects cofunded by EU (Interreg Programme). During the fall semester of 2009-10 he served as visiting professor at the Operating Systems Lab, School of Computer and Communication Sciences, EPFL (Lausanne, Switzerland). He has coauthored several research papers published by the USENIX, ACM and IEEE associations among others, while he also holds the US Patent No 7103595 entitled “Streaming Server.” Currently, he supervises 3 PhD candidates, and 2 MSc students.
