The beginning of the third millennium finds the University of Nis, which was founded in 1965, as a medium-sized, mature and well developed academic community, comprising thirteen academic units, i.e. faculties. Most of those faculties have composite structure, i.e. various departments, divisions or majors, offering wide and diversified study and research opportunities at both undergraduate and graduate level, including opportunities to obtain a Ph.D. degree. The number of the University teaching staff is 1.600, and its students body to more than 30.000. The Faculty of Electronic Engineering, as a one of the biggest faculties within the frame of the University of Nis, with 170 teachers/researchers, performs education and research through six departments in the field of computing, telecommunications, control systems, power engineering, electronics, and microelectronics. The faculty coordinates and participates in numerous international and national projects from different programs and founding schemes.
Research Group Background
More than two decades the group of the researchers from the Faculty of Electronic Engineering, University of Nis, Serbia, works in the field of parallel and distributed computing. Laboratory for Parallel and Distributed Systems (PaDSyS) was founded in 1992 as a research laboratory of Faculty of Electronic Engineering, Nis. The group is comprised of 5 researchers/teachers, 4 PhD and 10 MS students. In the focus of the research are parallel and distributed system, algorithms and architectures of specialized computer systems, digital signal processing, fault tolerant systems, computer networks, cloud systems, and education support systems. The published results cover the following main headings: processor array design methodology, implementation of various special purpose computer architectures at different platforms, fault tolerant systems, and technology enhanced learning. The researchers from the group teach courses in discrete mathematics, computer systems, computer architectures, parallel and distributed systems, computer networks, and cloud computing. The group coordinated and participated in several national projects covering different topics in parallel and distributed systems.
Prof. Ivan Z. Milentijevic coordinates the activities of the research group PaDSyS. He is a Full professor at the Faculty of Electronic Engineering, University of Nis, Serbia. His research interests include: computer architectures, parallel processing, fault tolerant systems, high speed computations, digital signal processing, management of IT projects, e-learning and education in informatics. He published 25 journal papers, one book, 40 papers in international conference proceedings, and more than 50 papers in Serbian conferences. Prof. Milentijevic coordinated 4 international projects in the field of education and research capacity building, and managed 2 projects for Serbian Ministry of Education, Science and Technological Development. He was a head of Computer Science Department at Faculty of Electronic Engineering, University of Nis from 2005 till 2010. Currently he is a member of the national Commission for Accreditation and Quality Assurance (CAQA) of the Republic of Serbia, and member of the national scientific board for electronics, telecommunications and information technologies within the frame of the Ministry of Education and Science.
